Entries being accepted for green school art contest

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A masterpiece comes in many forms.  In this case, artwork by area students, with a green theme.

"My Green School Art Contest" is organized by the Green Building Council, the Detroit Regional Chamber, and the Green Schools Committee.

It's meant to encourage young people to think outside the box and think about our planet.  Artwork is now being accepted for this year.

"We're looking for creativity.  We're looking for a message that says something about being green," says Peggy Matta.

Peggy Matta chairs the Green Schools Committee and she's also a judge.
Matta says students can use any medium: pencil, paint, crayon, even a collage.
And they're encouraged to use recycled materials.  However, the key is an earth friendly message.

First Grader, Phoebe Malak, won first place.

"It's about saving the earth so the animals can live in it so they don't go extinct," says Malak.

This year's judges also include a local artist and a representative from the DIA
Fox 2 caught up with several other winners inside the beautiful museum in Detroit.  Sarah Horst, who is in the fourth grade, made a collage about recycling.

"It just saves pollution and the less pollution the less global warming so it just kind of helps the earth," says Horst.

"I drew about conserving energy and recycling," says Erin Abraham, a fifth grader from Rochester Hills.

Detroiter, Madison Frank, who is in the sixth grade told Fox 2, "This girl with the orange shirt says always reduce, reuse and recycle and she says I love to reuse."

"It means the kids are learning about sustainability and being green in school and at home, says Organizer Connie Lilley.

Last year, organizers received 500 entries.  They're hoping for 1000 this year. Three semi finalists from each grade will attend a luncheon at Ecostore USA in Auburn Hills for final judging, an award presentation and prizes.

The competition is open to students in K-5th grades across the state and the deadline is Earth Day on April 22nd.  The winning entries will be displayed at the Michigan Earth Fest in Rochester.
