The Georgia Secretary of State's office sets the standards for security companies, such as background checks, fingerprints and minimum hours of training required.
However, an executive at major security firm said that those standards don't apply if a store wants to hire a single individual for security.
Gregory Norred of Norred and Associates, which is not associated with Long, said that his security personnel do not carry Tasers.
Norred said that his security people are instructed to ask disruptive individuals to leave the store. If they don't leave, security calls police to either remove or arrest that person. Long said in previous interviews that he needed to use force on occasion. His no-nonsense style drew its share of supporters and detractors worldwide.
People are more likely to give a private security officer more grief than a police officer "because they are not as respected," Norred said.
Norred said that any officer, whether you private or sworn, sometimes have to let the grief roll off their back.
FOX 5's Morse Diggs notes that a security guard has no more enforcement powers than any other citizen.
