How do you handle a slacking co-worker?

Posted: Updated:

Slacking co-workers cause their hard-working colleagues to put in four to six additional hours of work each week, according to a new study by corporate training firm VitalSmarts.

It also finds that 4 out of 5 employees say their work declines because they have to cover for a co-worker. That's a huge potential blow to the bottom line of a business when you consider that 93 percent of companies have co-workers that don't do their fair share.

Yet, only 10 percent of hard-workers actually speak up to hold their under-performing colleagues accountable. They fear retaliation or don't think what they say will even make a difference.

Four other reasons why employees won't speak up are: "They don't want to undermine the working relationship, it's not their place, they fear retaliation, and they don't know how to approach the conversation."

You've been hearing about it for a long time now – the advent of the self-driving car – and while it seems too like science fiction, the reality is that we are getting darn close.
