Snow accumulation expected Sunday

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An early spring snowstorm is expected to move into the Chicago area this weekend, and snow accumulation is expected for Sunday.

The National Weather Service said snow flurries could start as early as 4 a.m. Sunday, but the heaviest snow is expected after 1 p.m.

South of I-80 could see 3-6 inches, the city west and south to I-80 could see 1-3 inches and north and northwest of the city could see 1-2 inches.

The temperature is only expected to reach 34 degrees Sunday, when winds will gust up to 40 miles per hour.

The storm could dump as much a 9 inches of snow on central portions of the state. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for all of central Illinois and much of the Midwest.

Snow is forecast to begin falling around midnight Saturday and continue into Sunday night. A band of heavy snow could leave behind 6 to 9 inches in central areas from Taylorville to Danville. Some areas north of Peoria could get 4 to 6 inches. Forecasters expect a mixture of snow and rain south of I-70.

With temperatures near or just above freezing, the storm is expected to produce so-called "heart attack snow" that is very wet and difficult to shovel in the central part of the state.
