CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A South Side elementary school teacher who was fired on Wednesday is in police custody for allegedly making threats to harm students at the school.
Shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday, police responded to Schmid Elementary School in the 9700 block of South Greenwood Avenue following a report of a threat, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
A school administrator had been told that someone at the school had overheard a threat being made by a teacher on Wednesday, Mirabelli said.
CPS spokesman David Miranda said in a statement that the threat "against the safety of students at Schmid" was made by a teacher who had been "released from his position" on Wednesday.
The school was put on lockdown, he said, and CPS immediately notified authorities.
Police set up a perimeter around school and monitored the entrances, checking the IDs of everyone entering the building, Mirabelli said. The male teacher who made the threat was then taken into custody.
No one was injured in the incident, police said.
"Students at Schmid Elementary are safe," Miranda said. Parents were notified and "all students are now back in their classrooms."
