WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A teacher and former speech team coach at a west suburban high school was ordered held on a $600,000 bond Wednesday after being charged with repeatedly sexually assaulting of a former student.
Edwin Klemm, 43, allegedly carried on a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old Wheaton North High School student from February through November 2011, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.
The relationship was discovered when the girl's parents found a love letter Klemm had written the girl, according to prosecutors. They contacted the DuPage County Children's Center, which began an investigation.
Klemm allegedly assaulted the girl, at movie theaters, in his vehicle, in a Wheaton North classroom and at his house while his daughter was there, prosecutors allege.
Klemm, of the 1100 block of Howard Street in St. Charles, is charged with 11 felony counts of criminal sexual assault, according to prosecutors. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 44 years in prison.
"Teachers are role models who students look up to and in whom parents place a great amount of trust," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
"It is alleged that Mr. Klemm used his position of trust and authority to seduce his victim into giving him what he wanted. If the allegations are true, he violated that trust in the worst possible way," the statement said.
Klemm's next court appearance is scheduled for April 15.
