ATLANTA -
Severe storms developed just in time for the evening rush hour on Monday, producing large hail, heavy rains, and very strong winds in many areas.
Numerous tornado warnings were issued before the storms moved east and away from Atlanta.
FOX 5's George Franco was in Pike County, where lots of trees were reported down. The towns of Concord and Zebulon were especially hard hit. Authorities say there have been multiple reports of damaged structures, but fortunately, there has not been any damage reported to homes. They're still not certain whether winds are to blame, or whether a tornado may have touched down in the area.
Several school systems have announced they will be closed on Tuesday. Pike and Polk County Schools announced they would be closed on Tuesday due to storm damage in the county. Haralson, Heard and Monroe County Schools are also closed, but staff must report in at 10 a.m. Butts County Schools reported they would be on a two-hour delay Tuesday due to storm damage.
An intense storm hit the Silver Creek area, destroying the Silver Creek Mini Mart. WRGA-Rome's NewsTalk posted a photo of the destruction on their Facebook page. FOX 5's Justin Gray reports there were three employees inside the store at the time, and they hid inside coolers when the storms blew through. They sustained only minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Trees were down across the Cave Spring area. Seven people were hurt, but none of them were seriously injured.
In a storm-related death, authorities say a tree fell on a man's car while he was driving on Old Highway 100 near Cave Spring, trapping the man and his son. James Agan was taken to Floyd Medical Center and later pronounced dead. His son was treated and released from the hospital.
As of 11:40 a.m., Georgia Power reported that approximately 22,000 people were without power.
