MAYWOOD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A west suburban police detective has been charged with transmitting HIV while having sex with another man, authorities said.
Cicero Officer John W. Savage, 38, of LaGrange Park, was arrested Wednesday at the Cicero Police Department by Cook County Sheriff's officers, sheriff's department spokesman Frank Bilecki said.
The arrest stemmed from an online relationship that led to a physical relationship between Savage and a 24-year-old man, Bilecki said.
The man said he and Savage went to a movie on July 29, 2012, and after the movie, went to Savage's home in LaGrange Park, where they engaged in sexual activity, a statement from the sheriff's office said.
Later, the victim inquired about Savage's HIV status and was told that he was HIV positive, the statement said. The victim notified LaGrange police, who contacted the sheriff's office.
The Cicero cop appeared in court Thursday in Maywood and was released on an individual recognizance bond, Bilecki said.
Savage could not be immediately reached for comment.
A spokesman for the Town of Cicero did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
