Parking downtown could cost more with proposed escalating tax

Parking downtown could cost drivers more if Mayor Emanuel has his way.
On Wednesday, the mayor proposed switching city parking taxes from a complicated escalating fee to a percentage-based system. The change would mean more money for some drivers and less for others.
A driver who currently pays $30 during a weekday pays a $5 tax on top of that. Under the new system, they would pay $6.
A driver who currently pays $150 a week pays a $25 dollars tax. With the flat fee, they would pay $30 - a $5 increase.
A driver who scores a $12 daily early bird special pays a $5 tax right now. Under the new system they would pay $2.40.
