Fighting breast cancer on the gridiron

KENNESAW, Ga. -

A semi-pro football team is taking the fight against breast cancer to the gridiron. The North Georgia Panthers are helping a Canton mother tackle her aggressive disease.

When managers of the semi-pro football team heard about Monica Santamaria's four-month battle against breast cancer, they decided to move the battle to the football field. Saturday's game had more at stake than a few touchdowns.

Five rounds of chemotherapy have taken a toll on Monica's small frame, but her fearless heart, fighting spirit and love of football are still intact. This is why she was excited about what happened on the field at Kell High School on Saturday.

The Panthers dedicated the game to Monica and gave all the proceeds from the game to go to Monica to pay her medical bills. They raised more than $5,000 to help her.
