Police have charged a man in the hit-and-run of a 19-year-old woman in Athens.According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, William Wilson Heaton, 22, faces several charges, including hit-and-run and DUI, in the Feb.16 collision that injured Emily Bowman. Police said a truck jumped the curb and struck Bowman was struck as she walked with friends. She underwent brain surgery and remains in a coma in intensive care. A Facebook page has been set up tracking her recovery. The truck that allegedly hit Bowman was located by police, and Heaton was identified as a suspect. However, a warrant was not issued until Wednesday.Authorities are also charging Heaton with serious injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, and open container.Heaton's parents drove him to the Clark County Jail to turn himself in on Wednesday evening. Emily's mother, Debbie Bowman, said that she feels for Heaton's family. "I know that they have said that they're genuinely sorry, and I mean, my heart goes out to them, too, because they're also getting ready to lose their son," said Debbie Bowman.Heaton is expected to have a bond appearance before a judge on Thursday morning.
