Beat the winter blues and get a dose of Vitamin Z at the Zoo, smiles, fascination, wonder and memories that is. According to the Detroit Zoo, a dose of Vitamin Z is part of a complete childhood and may lead to an enriched life and sense of well-being. How does the Detroit Zoo kick that winter 'blah' feeling? Vitamin Z. From polar bears to horses, themed rides and science, the Detroit Zoo has something for everyone during their winter months.
One of the many popular exhibits during winter is the Przewalski horse. This particular horse is endangered, less than 2,000 are left in the wild and in captivity. The Przewalski breed was discovered in the 1870s by Russian explorer, Nikolai Przewalski. The Przewalski horse is the only remaining wild horse left and has never been trained for riding. Przewalski horses come from Mongolia, where the climate is much more extreme. They live in harems, where there is one dominant stallion and a number of mares (female horse). All other geldings (male horses) live in an area together, separate from the mares and dominant stallion.
The Przewalski horse is just one of many winter-hardy animals popular during the winter months at the zoo. Animals and exhibits adapt to all seasons during the Detroit Zoo's 362 days of operation.
