Financial aid running dry in Adairsville rebuilding effort

Posted: Updated:

A town ripped apart by tornado last month celebrating a milestone. With money raised by the community, and work done by volunteers, construction is going on to rebuild a home in Adairsville

A group of volunteers from the First Baptist Church of Augusta has spent a week in Adairsville rebuilding the home an 81-year-old man lost in the tornado. The local church organizing the rebuilding effort thought his house should be the first.

"He has Alzheimer's. He has hospice helping him. We started working on this house because we wanted him to be home," said Pastor Ken Coomer of Adairsville Church of God.

But sadly, he was not the only tornado victim without insurance. In Adairsville, eight houses without insurance were destroyed and more than 30 others had major damage. Without government help, those people must rely on volunteers to rebuild, but the money is running short.

"Well, the economics is -- we need help," Coomer said.

The project to rebuild the 81-year-old man's home will end up costing about $12,000. While there are more than enough volunteers to do the work, there is not enough money to buy supplies.

Organizers are now asking corporations to help rebuild Adairsville.

"It would mean the difference between dignity of an individual having his own place again, and not having anything. It would mean that somebody would have a home to live in or even to die in, versus not having anything," Coomer said.

A volunteer group from Michigan will complete the house in the next few days. After that, it's waiting and seeing if more money comes in, so more homes can be rebuilt.

The group helping people without insurance hopes a corporation will donate money or building material so that the work can continue.
