One woman was killed and two others were hurt when a speeding vehicle driven by one of them careened out of control and struck a light pole in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, police said.

About 3:57 a.m. the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed near East 88th Street and S. South Chicago Avenue when the driver lost control and crashed, said police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

One of the women, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. An official for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed that a person died in the crash.

A 27-year-old woman was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

The third woman, 22, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in "stable" condition, police said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. No further details were available Wednesday morning.
