Pastor Corey Brooks honored for contributions to community

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Pastor Corey Brooks will be honored Wednesday night for his contributions, in recognition of Black History Month.

In 2000, Brooks founded Chicago's New Beginnings Church on the South Side.

Brooks also helped form churches in Atlanta and Cape Town, South Africa.

Brooks also camped out on the roof of an abandoned motel near his church more than a year ago in an effort to raise money to demolish the motel and build a community center.

Last year, he walked across the country to raise money to build the facility.

Brooks will receive a Crystal Award and a namesake scholarship that will be given to a local student for their first year of college.
