GDOT considering expansion of HOT lanes on I-85

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Despite numerous complaints from commuters about HOT lanes on Interstate 85, the state is considering adding even more express lanes.

The lanes have been largely unpopular with commuters since their introduction in October 2011, but the Georgia Department of Transportation says they are looking at adding 10 more miles of them to I-85.

In January, there were nearly 17,000 trips a day through the express lane, which allow Peach Pass drivers to pay for a quicker ride home.

Jodi Borgef, who uses the express lane every day, says she likes the idea of it expanding up to her Hamilton Mill home.

"It's about $2,500 a year, but when I have two kids that are involved in extracurricular activities and I have the career that I want to balance everything, it's important," Borgef said.

The biggest complaint about the express lane is drivers say it's made things worse for those who choose not to pay the toll.

GDOT says the expansion of the express lanes would be different because they wouldn't be taking away regular lanes.

"This project is completely different in that it would be new construction, new capacity, adding one lane in each direction to I-85," said Teri Pope of GDOT.

The expansion would cost around $93 million. GDOT plans on holding multiple public comment opportunities in March. If enough residents don't want the lanes, they won't be built, according to GDOT.
