The attorney for Rita Crundwell has asked that dozens of state charges against the imprisoned former Dixon comptroller be dismissed.
The Telegraph in Dixon reports that Crundwell's Lee County public defender Bob Thompson made the filing Wednesday. Crundwell was sentenced last week to more than 19 years in prison after pleading guilty to embezzling $53 million from the northern Illinois city.
Thompson cited possible double jeopardy, saying the 60 counts of felony theft in Lee County contained items also in the federal wire fraud charge.
But the city of Dixon wants to move forward with the state charges. Dixon Mayor Jim Burke says the city is in favor of seeing Crundwell back in court. The Dixon City Council has expressed a similar view about the state's case.
