Suspect in at least 12 robberies caught in the act, shot by police

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago Police shot a man suspected of robbing at least 12 stores since January after he struck again Tuesday night on the Near North Side, police said.

The robbery happened a little before midnight at a Subway sandwich shop in the 800 block of North State Street, police said.

After holding up the shop, the man then jumped into an older model Ford SUV and sped off, police said. Officers say they spotted the man and chased him down, attempting to force the SUV over near Milwaukee and North avenues, in the heart of the Wicker Park neighborhood.

In an attempt to flee, the man backed the SUV into a police car before accelerating forward toward an officer in the street, according to a statement released by the Chicago Police Department

The officer "in fear of his life" opened fire, striking the man, according to the police statement. The man's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Shattered glass covered the ground just north of the neighborhood's iconic "six corners" intersection as a scrum of detectives worked in the cold early Wednesday. The suspect's SUV was parked across the northbound lane of Milwaukee Avenue, up against a parked car.

Beth Herris said she was closing down Francesca's Forno Italian restaurant across the intersection from the crash.

"All of a sudden, our dining room was lit up with blue and red and like 25 cop cars zoomed in," she said.

Investigators with the city's Independent Police Review Authority, which probes police-involved shootings, were at the scene early Wednesday collecting details, agency spokesman Larry Merritt said.

Detectives recovered a weapon at the scene, police said.

Police said they think the man who was shot has robbed 12 other stores since January.

On Monday, the man allegedly walked into the Subway at 66 E. Washington St. — right next to the Chicago Cultural Center — about 12:50 a.m. He took out a handgun and told a cashier to give him money, police said, adding that the man took about $400.

Police said all of the robberies happened between 11:39 p.m. and 2:15 a.m.
