CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A downtown resident was arrested Tuesday morning after walking about 300 yards out onto the ice at Monroe Harbor.
The police Marine Unit pulled the man to safety about 7:30 a.m. after he walked onto the ice at the harbor, said police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.
The man fell several times while walking on the ice, but continued to walk north on the break wall towards the frozen main entrance of the harbor, Kubiak said.
A Chicago Fire Dept. boat intercepted him on the breakwall and he was taken into custody, Kubiak said.
Ghassan Albraidi, 20, of the 100 block of North Harbor Drive, was charged with a misdemeanor count of reckless conduct.
He was unharmed and did not fall through the ice, Kubiak said.
Paramedics were at the harbor to evaluate him after he was brought ashore, Kubiak said. After an examination, he declined further treatment.
It was not immediately known why Albraidi walked onto the ice, she said.
