DETROIT (WJBK) -
It's a clear case of self defense according to Detroit Police sources who site evidence from witnesses and very clear surveillance video.
This let them know exactly what led up to the moment when a Martin Luther King Ladies basketball coach shot and killed 16-year-old Michael Scott and critically injured his 16 year-old friend.
We're told it appears the teens planned the attack. Surveillance video shows them waiting in the corridor, with alleged attacker Michael Scott placing a white t-shirt he brought with him on his head in the hopes of concealing his identity.
According to Detroit Public Schools, Scott only had enough credits to qualify as a freshman at Martin Luther King High School. Fox 2 has also learned that he was expelled the week before.
Sources say the video shows the 70-year-old coach walking two girls to their cars, Scoot and his friend jump out and pull out what appeared to be a gun. The two teens start beating on the elderly coach.
The two girls take off running, the surveillance images show the coach, who is concealed permit holder and police reservist, struggle to find his gun, but he eventually pulls it out and shoots both of his attackers.
The teens run off, one dialed 911 before collapsing on the tennis curt. Michael Scott made it to the median on Larned Street, south of the school, where his body was found.
Sources say the coach doesn't have a cell phone so he drove to the northeastern district to tell police what happened.
The coach was questioned, gave a statement and was released Friday night.
Police believe this is a justifiable shooting, but a warrant has been handed over to the Wayne County Prosecutor who will make a final ruling.
The weapon the teens allegedly had was not recovered. Fox 2 has learned the Scott was arrested for armed robbery of a Jets pizza in December and was expected to go to trial next month.
The other teen who was shot remains in critical condition.
We're told Detroit Police do not plan to pursue the fact that the coach, who was a CPL holder and police reservist, had a gun on school property. It's unclear if DPS plans to take any action.
