December of 2012 went down as the 9th least snowiest December on record and the 11th warmest ever for Chicago.
The outlook going into January called for warmer than normal temperatures, with near normal precipitation. Here is how January played out:
The average high temperature was 35.3 degrees which is 4.3 degrees ABOVE normal.
The average low temperature was 17.9 degrees which is 1.4 degrees BELOW normal.
Therefore, the average temperature for the entire month was 26.6 degrees which is 2.8 degrees ABOVE normal.
In terms of precipitation, Chicago received 3.63" which is 1.90" ABOVE normal. Only 2.6" of snow fell for the entire month. That's 8.2" BELOW normal.
January of 2013 went down as the 16th least snowiest January on record and in the middle of the pack in terms of the average monthly temperature.
For the most part, the long range forecast coming in to January was fairly accurate especially in terms of temperatures with slight variations in precipitation.
The outlook for February in Chicago calls for near normal temperatures with wetter than normal conditions. We do need snow, so a normal month for snow would be nice around here. February's monthly average snowfall is 9.1."
