DeKalb police say a 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle while walking to school on Tuesday morning.
Authorities say that Moses Moore was heading to Panola Way Elementary School when he was crossing Panola Road at Panola Way Lane around 7 a.m. For some reason, he darted in front of traffic and was hit by a black Mercedes SUV being driven by a woman.
"According to preliminary reports, although the child was in a crosswalk, he stepped into the path of an oncoming car traveling northbound on Panola Road. That child was transported to a local hospital," said Mekka Parrish of DeKalb County police.
The boy was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and was listed in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon.
Neighbors say the intersection in the morning has heavy traffic, and though police patrol the school zone, it was a matter of time in the dark, early morning conditions that something tragic would happen.
"At this point our detectives are looking into if the driver was at fault, and see if there are any other contributing factors to this accident," said Parrish.
The woman driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, say police. It is not known if the driver will face charges.
Police say the school and the boy's mother were notified of the accident.
