Pomegranate juice has been sold as a real 'cure-all' over the last couple of years. But in a decision made this month, the Federal Trade Commission has ordered at least one manufacturer to back off some pretty strong health claims.
The product is called POM Wonderful, and it's 100 percent pomegranate juice. If you're buying it because you like the taste, that's one thing, but if you're buying it for its health claims the FTC says hang on a second.
An ad the company used to run says "Cheat Death." It's a pretty powerful ad and it would really pack a punch if it were true.
This month the FTC upheld a decision to stop POM WONDERFUL and its supplement company POMx from making what it calls "false and unsubstantiated claims" that it will prevent "heart disease, prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction."
The company has been fighting the government since 2010. In a press release, the Los Angeles-based company says it rejects the FTC's notion its ads are misleading, and that the government holds food companies to the same standards as pharmaceutical companies and that's unfair.
