Ice storm barrels through Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Every salt truck in the city was deployed to Chicago's roadways as a looming ice storm threatened to bring the Chicago area to a halt. A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain hit the city and surrounding areas Sunday afternoon.

For Chicagoan Kara Powers winter was off to a good start until Sunday afternoon.

"I liked it until about a few hours ago when this rain started coming down," said Powers.

"It's not as cold as I was expecting. I was expecting it to be a lot colder but it's about the same weather that I left in Alabama," said Shawn Kelly, a tourist.

The dangerous combination created slick conditions for commuters in the city and the western suburbs. A crumpled piece of metal was the aftermath of a two-car crash in Lisle caused by the icy roads.

The accident happened near Lucano's Pizza and Catering and police tell Fox 32 News the weather was a contributing factor to the accident.

"You see this kind of weather, you've got to be careful," said Felipe DeCaxco.

That's the message DeCaxco has for his delivery drivers maneuvering the roadways during the storm.

"Not in a hurry to get anywhere. Watch the road, watch where you're going," said Jeff Bryan.

"The salt trucks are out there but it's still freezing up pretty quick out there," said George Rebhan.

The City encourages motorists to drive according to conditions and to be cautious on the road.
