'Forrest Gump' author to speak at Savannah event

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - The author of "Forrest Gump" is coming to speak in Savannah, where the movie version of his best-selling book was filmed.

The Georgia Historical Society says author Winston Groom will give a lecture Feb. 5 during the Georgia History Festival. He will speak about John C. Fremont, who in 1856 became the first presidential candidate to run under the banner of the Republican Party.

Groom has written 16 books including "Forrest Gump," which was published in 1986. The movie starring Tom Hanks was released in 1994. The film opens with Hanks comparing life to a box of chocolates while sitting on a park bench in Savannah's Chippewa Square.

The Georgia History Festival is held each February, the month Georgia was founded as a British colony in 1733.
