The police department for one California school district has bought 14 assault weapons to protect its students from mass shootings.
"It's unfortunate that we have to have that but it is the best message we could send to anybody who thinks to harm our children because the message we're sending is not here, not now," says Fontana police chief Rodney Jones. "We're prepared for you and if seek to harm our children we will neutralize that threat and you will most likely be killed."
The decision to purchase 14 AR-15 assault weapons is not without its critics, but the police department for the Fontana Unified School District said the move is necessary to keep students safe in light of recent shootings across the U.S.
"Everyone wants children safe. So at this time we as a community we definitely have to come together and find other ways but in the interim our police officers need to be equipped," says Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren.
The district's superintendent said the weapons will be stored on campus in locked safes for police.
