Chicago ended an impressive 711 day streak without a sub-zero temperature Tuesday morning. That is the 4th longest such stretch since records began in 1871.
It falls behind No. 3, 1954, with 718 days; No. 2, 1932, with 1056 days; and No. 1, 1940, with 1415 days. O'Hare officially dipped to -1 at 7 a.m., which is the coldest temperature in Chicago since -9 on Feb. 10, 2011.
This was also unique because of the lack of snow cover. The Chicago area rarely reaches sub-zero temperatures with no snow.
In 2011, when we last saw sub-zero temperatures, there was 20 in. of snow on the ground. The air mass overhead Monday night was much colder than the one in 2011. If we had snow cover the temperature could have easily reached -15 to -20.
The coldest temperature reported in the greater Chicago area was -7 in Mundelein. Wind chills were -15 to -24 Tuesday morning.
