An admitted U.S. Army deserter was held in lieu of $100,000 bail Sunday after a traffic stop on the Edens Expressway led to his arrest this weekend.
Joseph Michael Kelly, 35, a bartender who lives in the 3200 block of West Waveland, faces various gun and drug charges in addition to being a fugitive from justice.
Kelly was the passenger of a silver Ford Focus police said they pulled over about 8:50 p.m. Saturday just south of Touhy Avenue on the northbound side of Interstate 94. They said the car didn't have a rear registration light.
Officers said they smelled marijuana inside the car. And the driver, Tricia Walker, admitted she had a small amount of the drug in the car, according to police reports. Kelly initially denied it, police said, and refused to let officers search the vehicle.
Police said he eventually admitted the marijuana was in the car, though. He also told the officers about a loaded gun they later found under the driver's seat, in addition to the three grams of marijuana they found under the passenger seat and the small black pipe found on the rear floor board, according to reports.
Kelly also told them he was AWOL from the Army, police said.
