Tech Check: Super Bowl TV buying tips

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The Falcons are ONE WIN from the Super Bowl—and you know you'll need a new TV to watch that big game!  Every year, the stores are set for big sales around Super Bowl time, and we've got what you need to know to make the right choice.

These days, there are so many options to choose from.  Stores like Best Buy will sell a ton of TVs in the news few weeks as football fans upgrade, and that makes it a great time to buy no matter who you are.

So, what to buy?  LCD… LED… plasma?  Here's a simple rule: if you're upgrading from a TV that is three years old or older, anything you buy is going to be better and cheaper.

Here are the top three shopping tips from Best Buy:

1)  Buy plasma for sports.

2) If you're buying LED, get the highest refresh rating.  That's the hertz rating, which is how many times the screen refreshes.  You want it high for sports.

3) SmartTV: Please the rest of the family by giving them viewing options such as built-in Netflix and other services.

Just to get a variety of opinion, you can also check out CNet's TV Buying Guild.  They say go big and buy as big a screen as you can afford, regardless of the refresh rate or anything else.  They recommend at least 32 inches for a bedroom, and at least 46 inches for a family.

CNet also agrees plasma is your best bet.  One reason?  Plasma outperforms LED TVs because they have higher refresh rates.   Plasmas are also the more expensive model, so you might be trading size for value.
