CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
The new record for consecutive days without at least 1 inch of snowfall in Chicago now stands at 320 as of Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, Chicago has received only 1.3 inches of snow since Feb. 24, 2012.
The previous record of 319 consecutive snowless days had stood since 1940.
Kevin Birk, a weather service meteorologist, said the lack of snow falls in line with the drought much of the country experienced in 2012.
"We still are seeing drought conditions across much of northern Illinois," Birk said. "The precipitation deficits during the last year are 8 inches above average."
Though there is no heavy snowfall in the immediate forecast, Birk said. The weather service expects a large storm system to begin moving across the area Jan. 10 in the evening hours that may bring up to an inch of rain, but the warm temperatures will prevent any snow accumulation.
The weather service is forecasting a slight chance for the area Sunday.
The record for latest snowfall of at least 1 inch in a calendar year is approaching, as well. Jan. 17, 1899 marks the latest arrival of snow in city history.
