DES PLAINES, Ill. (FOX Chicago News) -
A Cook County grand jury is digging deeper into a hazing scandal at Maine West High School in Des Plaines.
Several athletes said they were sexually violated by their own teammates, and they claim the coach looked the other way.
Grand jury subpoenas have been issued in the investigation by the Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez. Grand jury proceedings are always kept secret, so the public will not know what evidence they are looking for, nor will they find out what comes of it until the end of the investigation.
Several Maine West students and former students have said they were sodomized by teammates in a hazing ritual.
District 207 has begun the process of firing Michael Divincenzo, the coach at the center of the hazing scandal.
Attorney to one of the victims, Antonio Romanucci, released a statement regarding these latest developments:
"...we do concur with the State's Attorney that this investigation should be completed in a thorough and methodical manner, so that if any new or updated charges are warranted, the evidence will support those charges. We remain hopeful that those responsible for what they knew about these acts are held accountable and disciplined."
