A member of the Georgia Air National Guard wounded by a bomb blast in Afghanistan is being awarded a Purple Heart by the Air Force.
Officials at Robins Air Force Base in middle Georgia say Tech. Sgt. Barry Duffield will receive the medal during a ceremony at the base Monday afternoon.
Duffield serves as a bomb disposal technician in the Georgia Guard's 116th Air Control Wing. According to the military, he was wounded by an improvised explosive detonation while deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and suffered injuries to his head and body.
Duffield earned the Bronze Star and Air Force Combat Action Medal during the same deployment.
The Purple Heart is awarded to military service members who are killed or wounded in action.
