Traffic on Clairmont Road in Chamblee continues to be impacted on Monday after a water main break over the weekend.
The water main break caused a huge mess in Chamblee on Saturday. At around 6 a.m., water started gushing from under the road, and it took hours for workers to dig out the broken pipe.
Service for hundreds of homes in the area was impacted by the water main break, and on Sunday the service was restored.
By Sunday night, Clairmont Road remained partially blocked, with a hole covering two northbound lanes. The southbound lanes have been converted to single lane traffic in each direction while crews work to repair the road.
Neighbors say they are glad the traffic has eased after the water main break on Saturday forced traffic onto side streets in the area.
"People
were yelling at the cars speeding because, you know, people had babies in
strollers, and walking dogs, and all of that. So people were frustrated in the
cars, and then, of course, you know, the neighbors out doing their usual thing,
you know, they were getting upset because the people were frustrated and
speeding," said neighbor John McCurley.
Crews blame the break on the age of the 30-inch pipe.
"There's no weather hazard. There's no cold conditions. So, it's probably one of our older pipes," said DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan.
DeKalb officials say the pipe was supposed to be replaced as part of more than a billion dollars in infrastructure repairs over the next five years.
