SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- You've never heard of Phil Lowe, but if you've ever enjoyed a fast paced Hall of Shame, a Problem Solver investigation, or just about any great story here on Fox 2, you've enjoyed his work.
"I did a little of everything when I started here. I was a sound man. I was a camera man," said Lowe.
But where he really found his calling was as an editor.
Lowe's a guy who could take five hours worth of raw footage, a folder or two full of investigative documents and a reporter's voice track and with his talents put it all together to make an informative and entertaining story you see on TV -- never too flashy, but always with style.
"I liken it to being an umpire in a baseball game," Lowe said. "You never notice the good ones, yet if somebody is sitting back and saying 'oh, that editing stinks' or 'wow, that editing was great', they're really kind of missing the point of the story. The story should be everything. You know what I mean? It's not about me. It's about making sure that the story is good."
Assistant News Director Kevin Roseborough knows when he's got a big story, Lowe's the guy to edit it.
"Without Phil, all we've got is a bunch of audio and video files in the computer. Phil is who makes it into great television," he said.
Lowe's not only a super editor, he's just a super smart guy about everything. An English major in college, he also makes sure us reporters sound smarter then we really are.
Lowe can take a few pieces of paper and create a graphic that tells a story.
Lowe can take a piece of music and rework it to fit a story seamlessly.
A story edited by Lowe looks more like a little movie, which is what he hopes to do when he moves on after 30 years here at Fox 2 going back to school to start a new career working on movies.
Editing a story with Phil Lowe is truly a partnership.
"That's one of the things that makes the pieces so successful is the close collaboration we've had over the years and the mutual respect," he told me.
Phil Lowe's a guy behind the scenes, but he'll always be a star here at Fox 2.
