A north Georgia sheriff is taking a stand against a Buford gun store that refuses to sell certain types of rifles to the public.
Dana Safety Supply has opted to only sell a semi-automatic, self-loading rifle to law enforcement and not to the general public. Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said that decision has led him to stop buying from the store.
"If they chose not to sell to civilians, law-abiding civilians, then I can choose not to buy from them -- that's all I was trying to say," Berry said.
DSS, which has stores in Georgia, North and South Carolina and Florida, said in a statement, "While we support the rights of Americans to own and safely enjoy firearms, we have chosen to sell some selected firearms to law enforcement personnel only. DSS remains dedicated to the safe and responsible sale of firearms and supporting the law enforcement officers who protect us all."
DSS joins other merchants which pulled weapons from their shelves or stopped selling certain types after the massacre in Newtown Connecticut.
Berry said he doesn't support any restrictions on assault-style weapons.
"The truth of the matter is that banning the object for the actions of the person to me is absolutely ridiculous,"
Berry says he doesn't support any kind of restriction on clips either. Bottom line for the six-time elected sheriff: the Constitution.
"You don't pick and choose, you either support the Constitution or you don't," said Berry.
Berry says he's received hundreds of emails from across the country. Most of them, he says, support his stand, but one woman from Florida called him a jerk. The sheriff said that he didn't mind and supports her right to say that.
