St. James Catholic Church granted temporary wrecking reprieve

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A 132-year-old church in the Bronzeville neighborhood has gotten a temporary reprieve from the wrecking ball.

St. James Catholic Church at 29th and Wabash is in such poor shape that mass has not been held in there in two years.

The Archdiocese of Chicago got a permit to tear down the church after Christmas. But a housing court judge granted a 90-day reprieve on Wednesday.

The Archdiocese estimates that restoring the church would cost $12 million.

Instead, the archdiocese plans to replace St. James with a new building close to the current South Side location.
