DETROIT (WJBK) -- A vehicle broke down on New Year's Eve. A woman and her husband, a stroke patient, were inside. Another man walked up and offered assistance, but he was there to harm, not help.
"I was like they... abandoned another car and then we [saw] the blowout. We said oh, they had a break down, so that's all we knew," said Wanda Musgrove-Spearman.
She rang in the New Year at her church and was coming home early Tuesday morning when she saw a truck broken down at Bradford and Findlay on the city's east side. She didn't know that around 12:00 a.m. a man had done the unthinkable, pretending he wanted to help the married couple with car troubles. Instead, police say he pulled out a gun and raped the 55-year-old woman in the back seat. Her husband, a recent stroke victim, couldn't help her. The rapist then stole their money and jewelry and ran off.
All this just blocks away from the Eastern District, and women in this neighborhood are worried.
"They need the cops to patrol this area more. They're right there, you know what I'm saying? It's just awful," said Renee Young.
The rapist is described as a black male in his twenties, 6'2" tall with a medium complexion, weighing 180 pounds and wearing all black.
"Please catch him," Young said. "I'm a single parent. I don't sleep [well] at night knowing that this rapist is here around us."
"They don't have regard for human life, and the city just needs to come together and pray and just look out for their neighbors," said Musgrove-Spearman.
Detroit Police are working on a sketch of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call the sex crimes unit at (313) 596-1950 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
