DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

A woman is in critical condition after a tree fell on her car in DeKalb County on Wednesday.

Police said that 49-year-old Sylvia Ennis was traveling in the northbound lanes on East Clifton Road when a large pine tree fell on her car. A 3-foot-long branch from the tree impaled Ennis' abdomen and trapped her in the car.

Druid Hills resident Ardent Hollingsworth described the horrible scene to FOX 5. He says the  pine tree came crashing down and crushed the vehicle.

"I woke up this morning and I heard a woman screaming, screaming and screaming. And she didn't stop and this man said 'calm down, calm down,'" said Hollingsworth.

Homeowners say uprooted and downed trees are commonplace in the historic community, especially after heavy rains. They say normally power lines or property take the hit. But when people are affected, it becomes a larger concern.

"As you know in Atlanta, what happens during a drought trees get very dry. We get some rain, the ground is saturated, we get some wind. The ground is saturated, a little wind pushes over the old pine trees. There was a big tree, over 100-foot tall." said homeowner John Robitscher.

Crews removed the driver from the crushed vehicle, and transported her to an area hospital with serious injuries. Work continues in the neighborhood to clean up the fallen tree.
