Staging a car crash is a crime, but one group has gotten away with it thousands of times in the name of science.

They're the experts who hand out vehicle safety ratings, and part of the job involves destroying cars to make them safer.

The wrecked cars are sold to salvage yards for parts, and the rest is recycled.
