For many, New Year's Eve means drinking, and parties – but plenty celebrated with family-friendly events in the Chicago area as well.

Legoland at the Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg is one of those spots. Families celebrated the New Year with games, rides and a balloon drop at three different times during the day.

The DuPage Children's Museum in Naperville offered music and entertainment for the kids. Families in west suburban Aurora rang in the New Year early, with games, sports demonstrations and contests at the Vaughan Athletic Center. And, the Brookfield Zoo hosted their own countdown beginning at 8 p.m.

Navy Pier rang in 2013 early for the kids with fireworks, but for the adults, there are more fireworks at midnight--as well as one of the biggest parties in the city.

The Resolution Ball will be held at the pier's Grand Ballroom, with a premium open bar, a live DJ and a champagne toast at midnight. Although this part is for adults, families are encouraged to check out Navy Pier's Winter Wonderland.

Navy Pier expects 3,000 people to attend their New Year's Eve festivities Monday night.

The Trump Tower is also celebrating big by going back in time. It's lounge--Rebar--is turning into a prohibition-era speakeasy, with the theme: "All That Jazz."

Other party-goers who were heading into Binny's Beverage Depot in downtown Chicago were planning on welcoming the New Year a bit closer to home.

"We're exciting to have a party together," said customer Kathy Piliouras. "Going out to the bars is a little much for us, we're getting older."

Illinois State police remind party-goers not to drink and drive, as they will be watching the roads closely. As the public celebrates responsibly, police recommend making arrangements for a designated driver, staying in one location all night, or taking public transportation.

The CTA and Miller Lite have partnered to offer penny rides on New Year's Eve – that's right, on 1 cent per ride from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
