Mississippi River could close south of St. Louis, barge traffic builds

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Army Corps of Engineers is warning water levels on the Mississippi River have fallen so low the river may be closed south of St. Louis next week.

Ice along northern sections of the river has slowed the flow of water, aggravating what was already a critical situation.

Barge traffic is already backing up because of restrictions in effect due to the low water levels.

Those barges carry coal, gasoline and grain critical to the economy of the Midwest.
