Authorities think a Bensenville man was dead for more than a day before his body was found along a creek in west suburban Elmhurst Monday afternoon.

Russell Winkler, 45, was found dead along the banks of Salt Creek behind the Diplotmat West Banquet Hall at 681 W. North Ave., according to a release from Elmhurst police.

Winkler, of Bensenville, was dead at the scene when police arrived about 1:20 p.m. He appeared to have been dead for more than 24 hours, the release said.

Elmhurst police and the DuPage County Sheriff's office are investigating, but officials had no word yet on the cause and manner of his death as of Monday evening.
