132-year-old Bronzeville church to be demolished

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A 132-year old church on Chicago's Near South Side could be enjoying its last Christmas.

The Chicago Tribune reports that St. James Catholic Church in the Bronzeville neighborhood could face the wrecking ball soon.

The Chicago Archdiocese sought a demolition permit last fall. But demolition was put off, because the church is on the city's list of historically important buildings.

The deferral has expired.

The archdiocese said restoring the old church would be too expensive, so there are plans to build to build a new church, just a block away.
