Naperville luminary display to support former Newtown family

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Baron Family lived in Newtown, Connecticut until this fall when they moved to Woodridge with their two children, who attended Sandy Hook Elementary.

In gesture of unity and support Monday night, the Barons, along with dozens of other families, lit luminaries to remember all those who died in Newtown.

As Keith Baron lit a candle for one of the Sandy Hook students killed in the shooting, his daughter Rosie remembered the young girl.

The Baron family put their Christmas Eve on hold to reflect on what happened in the town where they lived until just this past August.

"It's obviously an emotional time for all of us, but our intent here is to simply remind Chicagoland of Newtown and to keep out community, our friends and our neighbors in their hearts and in their minds," says Keith Baron.

The idea came from their friends in Newtown, the only hometown Rosie and her brother Jacob ever knew. Originally it was just going to be a single candle burning through the night.

"To have it blossom into 26 luminaries in front of people's homes is just wonderful and it's a step for us in our healing process to know that people here in a very short time have come so far in making us feel welcome and supported," says Barbara Baron.

Throughout the Seven Bridge's community in Woodridge, neighbors joined in, lining their driveways with luminaries and aligning their hearts with those who lost loved ones.

"Being a parent that would be any parents' worst nightmare to lose a child or anyone like I said, people lost mothers and spouses and siblings and I can't even imagine their pain during this time," says neighbor Patti McKeska.

"I'm just praying for them and it would be a loss for anyone I think, even if it's not your loved one," says Kyra McKeska, another neighbor to the Baron's. "I think we're all just so sad about this tragedy."

As many people across the nation remember the people of Newtown, the Baron's who have a personal connection to many of the families of Sandy Hook Elementary, say this gesture is not about them, but instead about sharing a light of hope and help this Christmas season.

"Our wish for Newtown and all of Chicagoland is peace," Keith says.

The Barons are asking people to consider donating to organizations that are helping people in Newtown cope with their loss. One organization particularly close to their hearts is the Newtown Youth & Family Services, who are providing counseling to grieving families. For more information, visit their website.
