The Talker: Brian Urlacher rants on fans, media in defense of Lovie Smith

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Bears' star Brian Urlacher has taken a beating this week from newspaper writers, internet columnists, radio hosts, and some fans because of something he said on FOX 32 News.

He's a regular on the FOX 32 Sunday night sports show and Lou Canellis asked for his opinion about fans and reporters who say coach Lovie Smith should be fired.

"There's a pretty strong cry out there from fans and the media for a coaching change... two of the people I don't care about. The fans or the media... They can say what they want to.. and hopefully will be for a long time," Urlacher said.

Urlacher says the players are to blame for the Bears' poor play.

In an irritated, sarcastic way, he had Smith's back. But the first sentence -- eight words of it -- got him trouble: "I don't care about the fans or media."

Here's some of what followed.

In the Sun-Times, Rick Morrissey wrote "that might be the quote of the year....because it perfectly represents the disdain the bears have for the people who follow them."

In the Tribune, David Haugh wrote: "...nobody should accept the face of Chicago's most beloved franchise thumbing his nose at fans..."

Carol Marin wrote an article titled "Bears' Urlacher is a Spoiled Brat." She called on fans to give away their Urlacher jerseys and tear up his autograph if they have one.
