CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Oswego school officials are on alert, after hearing rumors of school violence planned for December 21.

That's the last day of school before the holiday break for that district. December 21 is also the day associated with the end of the world, based on ancient Mayan calendars.

Now investigators are trying and calm the community's concerns.

A lot of students stayed home from school Friday as rumors of something bad happening spread like wildfire eventually including two high schools and two middle schools.

"Just about how gangs are going to come and shoot up the place," says Fabian Rodriguez. "It's pretty crazy and hard to believe actually."

At Oswego High School, many students stayed home. The absentee number was about 50 higher than usual, but at Oswego East High School, about 500 more students than normal were absent.

Even though Police determined the threat was not credible, the District took precautions.

"We do have an extra police presence at the school today both visible and undercover we will continue that all next week," says Kristine Liptrot with Oswego School District. "Do we believe that it's necessary that the police are there for safety reasons? No. Are we going to take a chance? No."

More than 50 students have been questioned for information and investigators were looking at social medial for clues.

"Everybody was a little worried, I mean like everybody's been talking about it for like the whole week," says freshman Alia Cruz.

In light of the Connecticut school shooting, many parents were understandably concerned.

"As a parent as soon as I heard that my first thought was come to the school and make sure my kid was okay," says Sheila Rodriguez, a parent. "I just don't know what they're going to do about keeping our kids safe. I am almost terrified to send him to school every day."

Oswego police reiterated that they do not consider the threat credible, but investigators continue to follow leads to determine who started the rumor.
