The Talker: Too fat to serve in the Army?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The army is trying to trim its bottom line and that means getting rid of soldiers who are fat.

The Washington Post says the military has kicked out 1,600 soldiers so far this year--that's 15 times higher than in previous years. One big reason? The military needs to get rid of folks.

The army is under orders to reduce the number of active duty troops 8,000 within 4 years.

Of course, it's not just soldiers getting bigger. Most Americans are getting bigger and the military sees that when they try to recruit.

75% of civilians who want to join the army are ineligible, mostly because they're overweight. But is weight equivalent to strength?

"I know some people who would be considered overweight but they have a lot of energy. They are very fit. They have a very active lifestyle," one person said.

Still, in an age of technology, some folks wonder if the military standards should change. After all, it's not like every soldier is out running across a battlefield with a backpack and a gun.

"If you're flying drone missions, what does it matter? You're just sitting in a room playing Nintendo basically," another person said.

"My impression is that there are so many different jobs in the military, I find it hard to believe there are not jobs that could be accomplished by someone who is overweight," commented another. "But that's also the military's call. They have a culture they are trying to sustain.

Our Facebook friends took no prisoners on this one.

Erik says, "Some jobs have certain requirements. Why should the army be any different? If you are too fat and too slow you would be the first one to die in a retreat.

Ezella wrote, "If you can't run to save yourself, how can you protect the country or anyone else??

Natalie says, "Need the best of the best not only to protect our country but to protect one another on the battlefield."

Joe says, "Let the military deal with the military. I think us civilians need to kinda stay out of it."
