The Chicago City Council has agreed to pay $6.25 million to a man who suffered brain damage when an intoxicated city worker plowed his city truck into a crowd of pedestrians.
The aldermen on Wednesday approved the payment to settle the lawsuit brought by Richard and Leeann Chang. Richard Chang was a computer scientist who became permanently disabled when he was pinned under the truck during the May 2011 accident. His wife suffered less serious injuries.
The Changs were among those hit when the pickup jumped the curb in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood. An open bottle of brandy was found stuck under the truck's gas pedal.
The city worker involved is serving a 9-year prison term after pleading guilty to charges of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.
