Dozens of people have been displaced after a fire struck a building at an apartment complex in Atlanta. The Wednesday morning fire at the Majestic Park Apartments on Delowe Drive sent residents scrambling for their lives and stranded in the cold.
"So they were beating on the door saying there was a fire," said resident Alexander Nelson.
Atlanta firefighters were called to Building W at the complex just before 6:30 a.m. Laura Alexander with the Atlanta Fire Department says when units arrived on the scene, heavy smoke and fire were seen on the second floor.
"The people who had the fire, they were already moving, taking their TVs out and everything," said nelson.
Alexander says efforts to put out the fire were delayed because no water was available at the first hydrant they tried to use. Once they were able to get water, crews got the fire under control.
"I lost everything today, man. I ain't got nothing, no work clothes. My ID, my credit and debit cards, everything is gone," said one resident.
Authorities say six units were destroyed, and another heavily damaged. They say between 20 and 25 people were displaced. A MARTA bus offered shelter while Red Cross volunteers helped victims begin the ordeal of rebuilding their lives.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
