CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

In gratitude for solving the February murder of a Subway employee in the West Town neighborhood, the restaurant chain has donated $10,000 to an organization that assists families of fallen police officers and firefighters.

Lyn Ward was working at the Subway in the 1100 block of North Western Avenue when an armed robber entered about 9 p.m. on Feb. 9, police said. Ward tried to run out the back but the gunman shot her in the neck, then ordered another employee to open the register.

Ward, 54, of the 4600 block of North Magnolia, was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where she died the next morning, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Detectives identified Anthony White as the gunman seen in a surveillance video from the robbery.

White, 36, of the 7000 block of South East End Avenue, was charged in October with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and a parole violation, police said.

On Tuesday, the Subway Sandwich of Chicagoland presented a $10,000 check to the 100 Club to aid families of police officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.

"This generous gift is a tribute to the families of police officers and firefighters who humbly serve their communities each day in keeping us safe," Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said in a statement. "The brave spirit of those first responders killed in the line of duty will live on as their families are assured their loved ones will never be forgotten."
